Meet the Instructor: Jen Wise
May 02, 2022Hi! I'm Jen - and first and foremost, I'm the mom to a small tribe of fantastic kids. I used to work as a writer, editor, and designer, but these days, I am so proud to call myself a painter. The best job I ever had was when I worked as an art teacher in a K-8 school, followed closely by cake decorator and camp counselor. I believe that it's really important to make time to learn skills - so this past year, I finally learned how to use my sewing machine, and these days, I'm feeling pretty confident in my sourdough-baking and cucumber-fermenting skills.
My favorite kind of art-making is process art, where it's all about the journey and experimenting with different materials, and much less about the finished product. One of my dreams is to show all children that they are artists and that there is no right or wrong way to make art. When I was in school, art class was always my favorite because we were allowed to create with abandon. PE was always my least favorite because there were so many rules to remember and so many ways to get out while playing a game.
When I make art, I love for my surroundings to be quiet and calm. Same for my second favorite activity - reading a good book! Growing up, my favorite series was The Babysitters Club, but now that I am older, I love to read non-fiction, although I will happily re-read a Babysitters Club book if there happens to be one laying around my house (and there always is!). These days, when I am not painting, reading, or making dinner, you can find me sharing art and all sorts of things on Instagram @jenwiseart.
